Notes for the Genus:

Lampranthus

Lampranthus is a large, heterogeneous genus of erect and creeping shrubs. In recent years the genus has been subdivided with some species being transferred to Oscularia and new genera such as Phiambolia and Ruschiella being created. Most species are found along the western and southern coasts of the Northern, Western, and Eastern Cape Provinces, inland along the border of the Eastern Cape Province, and northward into southern Namibia. The stems of Lampranthus are often reddish and the paired leaves are free or only slightly joined. Known for their large and showy flowers, some species have been introduced to horticulture and make popular rockery or bedding plants. They are easily propagated by seed or cutting.
